Sozyone González (Brussels, 1973) is a Belgian-Spanish artist that started his career heavily influenced by the culture of his neighborhood; streets with their own stories and legends…
Although Belgian by birth, Sozyone is heavily linked to Spain. Not only because it is his actual country of residence, but also because, as his last name suggests, he is from spanish descent.
Aged fifteen, he entered the art school where he met Smimooz Exel, with whom he created “De Puta Madre”, Belgium’s greatest rap band of all time. After they got expelled from the art school, they both entered Brussel’s Royal Academy of Arts at age seventeen.
During this period of time his portfolio grew exponentially with thousands of graffitis, seven rap albums and most importantly, turning the then still underground Hip-Hop culture into an aesthetic reference. During the mid 1990s Sozyone, along with Gold Jaba, Prince Pro, Turs, Byz and Kool Recto, created Ultra Boys International, one of the most popular graffiti crews in Europe and one of the most interesting worldwide. The crew, strongly influenced by a space-galactic aesthetic, mathematical abstraction, the futurism from 1970s comic books, alfabetic constructivism and Picasso’s cubism, created new approaches to understand the graffiti scene, and also placed themselves one step ahead in every level.
The Ultra Boys crew has evolved over the years and with new members, concepts and statements, it has established itself as an internationally renowned collective. Sozyone, one of the most preeminent active members, develops this cared interest for what he defines as “refined brutality”. An ecclectic taste of references such as mobsters, bandits, villains, gypsies and even bullfighters are treated under a romantic view that focuses on the hardship and struggles of a difficult lifestyle. A viewpoint where Sozyone finds the necessary ingredients to show the most delicate, aesthetic and novelistic parts of cultural models that directly relate with the motives that started his creative activity: the city with its neighborhoods and streets.
His artwork has been exhibited in galleries all over the world, specially in Europe, where he is a reference in the street art and graffiti scene.
