Hell’ O Monsters
If Hell’O started by using exterior walls as their canvas, it’s within the walls of the studio that the uniform and homogeneous identity of the duo was forged. Quite rapidly the strict aesthetic codes that they established based on mastering the line and graphic leitmotiv, were applied to designs, paintings, sculptures and installations. The creative approach is characterised by an extremely conventional freedom paired with meticulous execution. Their universe is inhabited by a surrealistic bestiary of mysterious animals, hybrid characters, architecture and badass geometry. Their references indistinctly fuse with medieval folklore, esoterism, techno music, the Memphis Design group, 17th century engraving, ancient mythology, surrealism, … Small narrative scenes, sometimes juxtaposed, can have a certain meaning or simply be absurd, but the humour and mockery of Hell’O leaves this open to the viewers’ own interpretation. Oxymorons and dichotomy are what makes their rhetoric successful. Playing with duality and satire, the collective constantly bounces back and forth between the attraction and repulsion of a paradoxically structured chaos.
